MARY KAUN ENGLISH

I have always been amazed by the strength, diversity and beauty of the natural world, however, I am also deeply concerned for its vulnerability. Using the inspiration gained from the rugged Cornish landscape I express this in my work, using abstract forms and vessels to capture the visual chemical essence of smoke and fire on their surface. The energy of the elements leaves the material with depth and a narrative. This is where Art and Science meet. The firing of my pieces occurs in an

open-air pit at my studio in West Cornwall – exposing the porous clay to the smoke given off by the organic materials used.It is intrinsic to my work that I use this sustainable and traditional method of firing ceramics using only locally sourced materials. Each of my pieces is unique.
